Chandigarh — Where modern design meets Himalayan foothills
Le Corbusier's masterpiece city — a UNESCO World Heritage complex, lakeside calm, sculptural gardens, and the gateway to Himachal. A perfect city break and a natural starting point for Himalayan holidays.
Chandigarh is India's most celebrated modernist planned city, shaped by Le Corbusier, and it shows in every broad avenue, every sector grid, and every building. Set at the foothills of the Shivalik Hills, it has a calm, spacious character unlike any other Indian city. The Capitol Complex earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2016, recognising it as one of the finest examples of 20th-century modernism.
Beyond the architecture, Chandigarh rewards slow exploration. The Rock Garden is one of the most extraordinary outsider art spaces in Asia. Sukhna Lake offers a quiet counterpoint to the city's precision. The Rose Garden is Asia's largest. And the city's proximity to the hills — Kasauli, Shimla, Pinjore — makes it a natural launchpad for mountain escapes.
At Geranos Getaways, we build Chandigarh itineraries that go beyond the famous sites — into the neighbourhoods, the markets, the cafes, and the quiet spots that residents treasure.
What awaits you
Five Chandigarh experiences worth your time
Each one a different face of the city.
1
Capitol Complex & Open Hand
The UNESCO-listed administrative hub of Chandigarh — the Secretariat, the High Court, the Assembly, and the iconic Open Hand monument. Le Corbusier's finest legacy, best experienced at dawn when the shadows fall dramatically across the raw concrete facades.
2
Rock Garden
Nek Chand's extraordinary 35-acre sculpture garden built entirely from waste materials — broken bangles, tiles, bottles, ceramic washbasins, industrial scrap. A fantasy-world of waterfalls, archways, and thousands of figures. One of the most remarkable outsider-art spaces in Asia.
3
Sukhna Lake
A 3 sq. km rainfed reservoir at the foot of the Shivaliks. The promenade is where Chandigarh comes alive at sunrise and sunset — joggers, boaters, birdwatchers, and people doing absolutely nothing. A still centre to an ordered city.
4
Zakir Hussain Rose Garden
Asia's largest rose garden — 40 acres, over 1,600 varieties of roses, and a burst of colour from January to March when it's in full bloom. The annual Bougainvillea Festival and Rose Festival draw visitors from across the region.
5
Government Museum & Art Gallery
Chandigarh's finest museum — Gandhara sculptures, miniature Pahari paintings, a remarkable Partition-era collection, and coins and metal idols spanning millennia. A quiet, serious place that rewards careful attention.
