Kerala is a tropical paradise of serene backwaters, misty hill stations, golden beaches, and rich cultural heritage — from the tranquil houseboats of Alleppey to the rolling tea gardens of Munnar and the rejuvenating traditions of Ayurveda.
Kerala is unlike any other Indian state. It has a long Malabar coastline, the most extensive backwater network in the country, the highest literacy rate in India, and a culinary tradition — coconut, spice, seafood — that is among the richest on the subcontinent. The Western Ghats form its eastern spine, creating a succession of hill stations, wildlife sanctuaries, and waterfalls.
The backwaters are Kerala's signature. A houseboat journey from Alleppey — drifting through palm-lined canals, watching village life pass at the pace of water — is one of the most genuinely peaceful experiences available to a traveller in India. Munnar's tea gardens at dawn, mist rising from the valley, are equally indelible.
Kerala's cultural heritage is equally distinctive — Kathakali dance, Mohiniyattam, Kalaripayattu martial arts, the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race, and the extraordinary Thrissur Pooram elephant festival. Ayurveda here is not a spa add-on — it is a 3,000-year medical tradition available in dedicated retreats and hospitals throughout the state.
What awaits you
Six Kerala experiences that define God's Own Country
Each one a different dimension of a remarkable state.
1
Alleppey Backwaters
The quintessential Kerala experience — a houseboat journey through 900 km of interconnected canals, lakes, and lagoons. Watch life at the pace of water: fishermen casting nets at dawn, coconut palms reflected in still water, children waving from the banks, sunsets that last forever. Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the gateway — and Kumarakom, with its bird sanctuary, offers a quieter alternative.
2
Munnar Hill Station
Kerala's most beautiful hill station, set at 1,600 metres in the Western Ghats. The landscape here is made entirely of tea — rolling green gardens covering every hillside, misty valleys between them, and the sharp fragrance of freshly picked leaves drying in the afternoon sun. Anamudi (South India's highest peak), Mattupetty Dam, and Eravikulam National Park (home of the Nilgiri Tahr) add wildlife and scenery.
3
Thekkady & Periyar Wildlife
Periyar National Park at Thekkady is Kerala's finest wildlife sanctuary — elephants, gaur, sambar, and occasional tigers in a landscape of tropical forest surrounding an artificial lake. The boat safari on Periyar Lake offers intimate wildlife encounters unlike anywhere else. Spice plantation tours and bamboo rafting are equally memorable. The surrounding region produces pepper, cardamom, clove, and vanilla.
4
Kovalam & Varkala Beaches
Two of Kerala's finest coastal destinations, each with a distinct character. Kovalam — with its crescent-shaped lighthouse beach — is gentle, family-friendly, and the original Ayurveda tourism hub. Varkala is more dramatic: a 50-metre red laterite cliff above an open beach, with a string of cafes and Ayurvedic massage centres on the clifftop. Papanasam beach at Varkala is considered sacred — the Janardhana Swamy temple sits above it.
5
Kochi — Cultural Gateway
Kerala's cosmopolitan hub — a city of overlapping histories: Portuguese, Dutch, British, Jewish, Chinese, and native Kerala. Fort Kochi's Chinese fishing nets are iconic; the Mattancherry Palace murals are extraordinary. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale (every two years) makes this one of the most important contemporary art destinations in Asia. The Jewish synagogue in Jew Town is one of the oldest in the Commonwealth.
6
Wayanad — Forest District
A lush green hill district that feels like Kerala's best-kept secret. Wayanad offers a peaceful retreat with dense forests, stunning waterfalls (Soochipara, Meenmutty), prehistoric Edakkal Caves with Stone Age pictographs, coffee and spice plantations, and the wild Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Tribal communities in the district offer genuine cultural exchange — a different dimension of responsible travel.
